Beautiful People: Lily!

Hey guys! Sorry for no post last Thursday. My work week was pretty crazy, and I didn't realize I had missed a post until Friday. So today, I thought I'd do something fun and participate in the Beautiful People link-up! Basically, Beautiful People is a monthly set of questions about your characters that anyone can answer. It's hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In, and you can read more about it here!

I know it's almost August, but I'm going to do July's questions anyway because they're fun. So now, let me introduce all of you to the MC of my fantasy book that desperately needs a title, Lily.

My faceclaim for Lily is Nina Dobrev, simply because she's exactly how I imagined Lily to look. Lily is your not-so-average thirteen-year old (though this pic of Nina would be Lily around age eighteen, so book 3-ish). She's incredibly smart for her age and has skipped a couple grades, making her the target of some very nasty bullies. She loves punk-rock, can climb to the top of a tree unnaturally fast, and would probably kill a man for macaroni and cheese. Oh, and she's also a princess with super kick-butt magic which, when she's using it, makes her eyes glow with a kaleidoscope of colors. How cool is that?
So, now that you know a little more about her, let's move onto the questions!

1. What’s their favourite ice cream flavour? Ben & Jerry's Phish Food. Mmmmm.

2. Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What are they wearing? Who will they be with? Honestly, Lily isn't very big on going out, and she doesn't have many friends, but if she's in Aurelia (her kingdom) she'd probably be going on a walk in the woods with her best friend, Jackson. If she's in Reality (our world, obviously) she'd probably be going bowling with her brother and Aunt Bella. Either way, Lily would be wearing jeans and a band tee. She doesn't do dresses.

3. Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Do they wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Are they in socks that are ratty and full of holes? What do they consider comfortable and what do they consider agony? Black Converse All Stars or hunting boots. It really just depends on her mood. Agony, of course, would be high heels. How anyone manages to walk when their heel is eight inches off the ground, Lily (and I) will never understand.

4. Do they have any birthmark or scars? Where are they and how did they get them? Lily suffers from depression, so she does have scars on her wrists. Though any other scar or injury she receives just fades because of the Healing magic she possesses, her self-harm scars are linked to her emotions, and deep down she doesn't believe they deserve healing, so those scars remain.

5. What kind of music do they listen to? Does it change depending on their mood or is it always consistent? (Feel free to share samples!) Lily rocks out to All Time Low, Mayday Parade, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Sleeping with Sirens, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, etc. All that fantastic jazz. (That was just a figure of speech. Lily is not a fan of jazz music :D)

6. Do they have any musical talent? Play an instrument? How’s their singing voice? I'm pretty sure Lily can play guitar and sing, but she won't tell me for sure. Stubborn little butt.

7. What kind of book would you catch them reading? ...Lily? Reading? *dies of laughter* Okay, seriously though. I guess if Lily read, she'd like exciting, action-packed stories like Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes or The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Then again, I could totally see her secretly reading The Fault in Our Stars or If I Stay and sobbing her eyes out.

8. How would they spend their summers (or their holidays)? Lily spends her summers surrounded by nature, whether she's in Aurelia or Reality. She has Nature magic, too, which allows her to have a special connection with nature. The woods are the place where she can truly be herself.

9. It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. Ex. If they’re eating breakfast, what’s on the menu? Are they hiking, shopping, lazing around? Hmmm... if she was in Reality, Lily would be chilling in her bed, probably on Tumblr or Pinterest. If she's in Aurelia, she'd probably be in bed as well, but moaning in agony over the fact that Aurelia doesn't have internet access while her older brother tries to drag her butt out of bed. (Heehee I'm imagining this scene now and it's quite amusing. I should add this into the actual books.)

10. Is there anything your character wants to be free of? Honestly, there are times when Lily simply wants to be free of life itself. Lily goes through a lot of stuff: depression, bullying, learning she's a princess, discovering she has magic, accidentally setting a building on fire, expulsion, falling through worlds, getting separated from her family, pressure, anxiety, capture, war, sickness, magic loss, insanity, etc. Lots of stuff. And sometimes, Lily just wants it all to end. But, she always, always manages to fight through it, no matter what it is, and come out on top a hero.

And that's Lily! Though a bit shy and nervous around people at first, Lily is seriously a sweetheart and I adore her. Wow, this was really fun to do... maybe I'll do next month's Beautiful People questions, too. :)
